Read With Me Family Literacy Project is a partnership between Tri-County Literacy and Midcoast Maine Community Action’s Head Start program. The mission of Read With Me is to support and increase literacy activities in the homes of families with young children such as those who participate in Head Start.

At the beginning of the school year, all adults with children enrolled in a participating site in the tri-county area are invited to sign up for the Read With Me sessions that will be held once a month throughout the school year. The adults are encouraged to make a commitment to RWM at the start of the year in order to get the full benefit from the program. Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles or other adults within the family may participate. Childcare for younger siblings is provided during the sessions to enable more people to attend.

Every Read With Me session, which lasts for approximately 1½ hour, begins with a carefully selected children’s book.

First, the site coordinator introduces the book to the participating adults. The site coordinator then engages the group in a discussion about literacy, child development, and related parenting issues.

Next, the adults join the children in the classroom, where the teacher reads the featured book aloud, modeling read-aloud techniques. Then, together, the adults and children participate in an activity related to the book.

Last of all, the adults reconvene with the site coordinator to discuss what they experienced in the classroom. The site coordinator presents specific book-related activities the adults can do at home, encouraging them to spend time talking, playing and reading with their children. The adults are also given information about local libraries, adult education programs, career centers, and Tri-County Literacy’s individualized, free tutoring program.

Families each receive:

  • a copy of the featured book
  • a poem
  • suggested follow-up activities to do at home
  • a list of other books to read

Classrooms each receive:

  • two copies of the book
  • a collection of related books for the children to check-out for home use
  • poems
  • suggested extension activities to do in the classroom
  • a list of related books to read
